Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon use the phrase “tender mercies.” In my church, this phrase is often used to describe the simple, day-to-day blessings of the Lord—the moments when we are reminded that God is not only merciful at the Last Day, but every day, and that He is aware of and involved in the details of our lives. What are some of the tender mercies you have noticed recently?
Monday was a crazy, jam packed day. I really wasn't sure I was going to have time to get everything done that I needed to. I decided I was going to probably have to skip class to take a test. I had an hour between classes and had not studied yet. So, I was going to go study and then take the test and then see how much of class I could catch. I went and studied until I felt prepared, went up and got my test, took it, and as I was walking out of the testing center room, I looked at the clock. It was exactly 1:00, the time my next class started. It was by the grace of God that I was able to study for and take a test in just under an hour, and I ended up with a very acceptable score.
ReplyDeleteThis week has been one of the "perfect storms" and yesterday was one of the biggest days. I had classes all day, a group project immediately after my last class, and then I was responsible for several things at the big Italian club event that night. At around 6:30, we finished our group project and I remembered that I had committed to bring bread for our potluck dinner. There are no grocery stores very close to campus, so I had to walk about 20 minutes to a store near my apartment where I bought some baguettes. I hoped that I would be able to drive the car back, but when I got to our garage, I saw that my brother had taken the car out. So I began walking back to campus, resigned that I would not be able to get everything done on time for the activity. Just then, a friend drove up and stopped in the middle of the road and gestured to me to get in his car. He then drove me up to campus, where I got everything ready just in time. It was for me a little miracle--a tender mercy of the Lord.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience on Monday. I was meeting up with a couple of people after my classes were done to study for our midterm. It had been five hours since I last ate and I was planning on grabbing something small to tide me over until I got home, but I realized that I had left my wallet at home. I was a little frustrated that I would have to deal with hunger pangs while trying to study. Then I was happily surprised with my friend arrived with some treats from the bakery he had purchased to share with us as we studied.
ReplyDeleteI recognize that my hunger pangs were really not a big deal, and that I would have probably studied just as well without having a snack, but it was still miraculous. More importantly than whetting my hunger, this tender mercy increased my appreciation for a friend and my desire to emulate his simple generosity.
