The purpose of this blog is to open a dialogue among friends about our faith(s). My hope is that this will help us understand each other better and be edified together. While I am not opposed to confronting our beliefs and understanding of doctrine, I think the main purpose of this blog should be to share rather than to confront or to convince. May that sharing strengthen our friendship, enlighten our minds and bring us each closer to God.

Covenants
I was recently asked to give a talk in church about "making and keeping covenants." I don't know exactly what other Christian churches teach about covenants, but they are central to Mormon theology. What is your understanding about covenants? Does God still make covenants with men, as He did in the Old Testament? What is the "new covenant" Christ speaks of? Why did/does God interact with men through covenants?

First thought: Is there a difference between a covenant and a contract? If we were to study the Greek and Hebrew words which have been translated as "covenant" in our Bibles, it may be that there isn't actually a difference between a covenant and a contract, I don't know. However, I think it is useful to think of a covenant as associated with a close, personal relationship. Marriage, for example, is a covenant relationship, not a contractual one. Thus, I think that God's covenants imply the kind of relationship He would like to have with us--the kind of relationship we could have with Him by faithfully observing our covenants.
